Almond Valley; a fun-filled day of discovery for all of the family.

Almond Valley Light Railway

At one time, narrow-gauge railways would have been a familiar feature of the local landscape, carrying shale between mine and oilworks, or hauling coal or shale underground.

Very little survives of these industrial railways, but they have inspired the creation of our own 2' 6" gauge railway which runs 500m from the farm to the weir. Plans exist to double the length of the railway, once funding and opportunity permit.

The railway track and most of the locomotives were aquired from various defence establishments during the 1990's.

The railway operates at weekends between Easter and the end of September, and daily during some holiday periods. Please phone in advance of your visit to confirm that the train will be working.

Hunslet 2270 of 1940 and Baguley Drewry 372 of 1980 are potentially workable spares, whilst a variety of other diesel and electric locomotives await a little care and attention.
