Almond Valley; a fun-filled day of discovery for all of the family.

Welcome to WILD ADVENTURES

A programme of games, crafts and activities for children and their families, running daily throughout the school holidays from Monday 28th June to Sunday 22nd August 2010 A.D.

Throughout the course of the summer we’ll be building an iron-age encampment, constructing shelters, planting crops and caring for livestock in a site across the river in Charlesfield. We’ll be exploring, making wonderful things, summoning up ancient spirits, scavenging for food, and much more besides.

If the weather’s bad we’ll stay in the main museum building and indulge in prehistoric crafts.

Prehistoric Frolic activities will take place between 11am and 1pm and between 2pm and 4pm. There’s no need to book in advance, just drop in, join in, and leave once you get bored.

Parents and carers MUST REMAIN WITH THEIR CHILDREN at all times and will be expected to join in the fun! Because of the need for this close support and involvement, Prehistoric Frolics is unsuitable for group visitors.

The Adventurer's Diary

Week One, Regeneration, Regrowth and Repair.
The ice has retreated with the advent of the sun. Life begins again at the camp; and there is plenty to do. Help our chief adventurers as they attempt to restore the camp, repair the fences and shelters, and prepare the ground to receive the first crops.

Week Two: The Work Continues.
It's time to build fences and make safe homes to protect the sheep and chickens. Seeds are planted in the clearing, and a medicinal herb garden created to keep everyone healthy, along with a grinning scarecrow to protect the crops.

Week Three: One for the Pot.
Make fire, create a hearth and it's time to eat and drink. Collect seeds and grains, grind the cereals, and make bucket-loads of delicious porridge. Nibble some dainty oatcakes and wash them down with some prickly nettle tea.

Week Four: The Hunt is On.
Time to fill the larder. Make spears, throwing sticks, and bows and arrows then try some target practice. Look for clues and follow trails through the long grass. Make a hunting mask and dig a food pit.

Week Five: The Comforts of Home.
Scavenge the fields and collect wool, then make felt, yarn and fabrics to bring a little luxury to the shelter. Decorate the camp with natural pigments and the brightest flowers of the forest, and add your wish to the wishing tree.

Week Six: Mesolithic Makeover
Relax with a prehistoric mudpack then splash yourself with stinky perfumes make from herbs and flowers. Make jewellery from stones and pebbles, or caps and amulets from woven willow.

Week Seven: Time to Celebrate
Add the finishing touches to the huge wickerwoman, paint your face, make music with whistles and drums, invent new dances, and celebrate your survival for another year in the wilds of West Lothian.
