Midcalder Camera Club

5th March 2010:

The Mid Calder Camera Club has been active around the region and has been actively taking images of the remaining shale era landmarks. Some of the images are reproduced here....

27th September 2009:

The Midcalder Camera Club has been established for twenty five years and has a proud track record of contributing to various local and county-wide projects for many years.

For their Shale Villages Project, members of the club came to the Shale Oil Museum at the almond Valley Heritage Centre and, over a couple of visits, became familiar with the museum archival collection of historical photographs. From the museum collection and other images sourced from the History HQ in Blackburn, the Camera Club is in the process of analysing key images of the county with the aim of allocating task-projects to club members based on the understanding of the research.

As reproductions of the images are allocated, club members will return to the point of the original photograph and take a series of new complementary images. In many ways this is very significant historical research. Not only will there be the opportunity to compare and contrast the photographs, but thanks to the efforts of the Mid Calder Camera Club, there will be a systematic collection of images and data of what remains of the shale oil industry, as well as a greater understanding of just how much has changed in the last 50+ years.
