Surveying

The Roman
Camps group are in the process of transferring from training
and use of equipment to conducting their first oral history
interview. The group will undertake oral histories were possible
in and around Roman Camps but are also keen to act as a roving
group to cover other area of the shale area.

September 2009:
The RCOHG is currently at the stage of developing a long term
research strategy which will involve a structured approach
to local history through primarily oral testimony.
So
far, the first stages of training in conducting oral history
interviews has been completed and the RCOHG is in the process
of sourcing people in the Roman Camps, Uphall, Broxburn and
Pumpherston areas to interview.
From
the work of the Roman Camps group, it is hoped that the people
of the village, people who have perhaps spent the greatest
part of their lives in the village, can make a contribution
to the wider county understanding and knowledge of this isolated
hamlet.
The
grounds of the oil works are still visible, there may not
be much in the way of remains of the industry in the village,
but there is the indelible and archaeological imprint of the
industry upon the very ground of the village. And this imprint
is a significant part of the very essence of those who live
and have grown within the village boundaries.
