| Victorian
doctors were convinced that constipation (not going to the toilet
regularly) caused many diseases. Dr. Robert Bell, in his book "Our
Children", wrote: "In
their normal state, faeces (jobbies) should be the consistence of
porridge...... Hard masses in the bowel give rise to...dreams, nightmare,
night-terrors and fevers at night...... The symptoms of constipation
are... an ashy complexion, dark lines under the eyes, languor, irritability
of temper, fickle appetite, coldness of the feet and hands, headache,
bad taste in the morning, starting during sleep, grinding the teeth,
and feverishness"
Stewed
prunes, figs, brown bread and wholemeal porridge were suggested
to relieve constipation, but in severe cases the use of an enema
was recommended. |

This
advert was put together as a demonstration by one infantile adult.
In normal circumstances, the creative team behind the advert might
be acknowledged like this:
Katy
(7), Arthur (6) and Michael (8) passed around the enema kit from
the museum collection, then looked at some old medical books and
a chemist's catalogue. After a lot of talk, they agreed on the kind
of things you might say in an advertisement, then drew up a storyboard.
Virginia
(10), Fred (7) and Molly (8) took turns scanning pictures from the
old books, then prepared the images for use in the advert. Keiligh
(4), Scott (3) and their mum decided how the man's face would change
whilst Peter (10) got the eyes just right. Maggie (8) and her dog
Spot (8) decided how the man should dance.
Brian
(12), Victor (11) and Shelly (10) recorded the sounds, Kylie (10)
played the keyboard whilst Samantha (5) made the rude noises
