Lavex hand cleaner was produced between the 1930’s and the 1950’s by the Lavex Company of West Calder, a small enterprise whose main products seem to have been potting compost and lawn dressing. The tin in the museum collection is still filled with a pink soapy substance mixed with granular material (perhaps a mixture of carbolic soap and sawdust?).

Lavex was made in West Calder, an industrial town serving the needs of the shale industry. Shale mining was hard physical work and those who worked in processing the oil often suffered from skin diseases as a consequence of the filthy and oily working environment. This oily dirt was constantly brought into the home, requiring hard physical work to keep the house clean. West Calder is therefore one of the least likely place to be considered “the land of beautiful hands”.

How we made the adverts

Having observed some of the modern adverts for beauty products we thought it would be interesting to market this utilitarian cleaning product as a beauty aid using all the hype, spin and jargon of today’s cosmetic industry. We started the advert by introducing some original miners from that era and pretended that one was showing us his hand. Many children helped us by letting us take photos of their hands that were the digitised and used in the animation.

To create the magic hand effects, children were asked to draw around their hands and decorate then as they wished. Mhairi age 4, Megan (6) and Paige (5) did particularly well. These were then scanned into the computer and animated against a background. We also created and added twirls and stars in the computer and added these to the hands.

One of our ‘Mums’ (Claire 21) help us out when it came to narration as this got a bit difficult at times! Her son Christopher age 4 helped us out with some of the other sound effects. During the making of the main advert we decided to make an alternative advert (below) out of the materials that we had already gathered, such as hand prints and animated hands. We also came up with the idea of making up our own song and have the children sing it. We chose the tune of ‘Tommy Thumb’ because it was familiar to a lot of children and it was in keeping with the hand theme. We had many volunteers but none so enthusiastic as Sophie 10, Benjamin 8, Calum 6, Madison 6, Magnus 5 and Ellis 8. Stephen 8, Christopher 8, Lauren 6, and Calum 6 also made an excellent effort.
