Rows, Cottages and Villages.
Worker's housing provided by Scottish shale oil companies.

The rapid development of the shale oil industry brought with it a great influx of labour into the shale districts. Oil companies needed to built accommodation to house their workforce, usually in the shadow of the oilworks and often remote from other centres of population.

This section of the website aims to provide a comprehensive list of these "Shale Villages" and assemble information about the life of these communities. Find information about each village from the menu to the left or the map below.

Pink markers indicate sites where housing built by Scottish shale oil companies still exists.
Purple markers are sites of "ghost villages" where all housing has been demolished.

Click each marker to identify the site and follow the hyperlink to further infomation.
Click the "sat" tab and zoom in to see how these sites relate to the modern landscape

More About these Pages.

"Rows, Cottages and Villages" is intended as a companion to the "Shale Villages" project. The initial goal is to list and map oil company housing and illustrate how these sites relate to the modern landscape. The intention is to provide a basic framework of knowledge to encourage and support further research and recording work by community groups and other interested parties.

It is hoped that additional information on each village will be included as further research takes place. Much more may be gleaned from materials held in our museum collection (including oral history recordings) and from archive sources such as Valuation Rolls, Census Books, and official papers such as Annual Reports of the Medical Officer.

An "Additional Resources" tab at the bottom of each page will provide opportunity to publish more detailed studies and records compiled by experts and enthusiasts, and to provide links to more detailed sources of knowledge.

"Rows, Cottages and Villages" is seen as a first step to establishing a much more ambitious on-line resource that will encompass data on mine and oilworks sites, and also provide information on shale oil companies, processes and historical episodes. Such a major undertaking can only be achieved through the participation of many with an interest in this unique Scottish industry.
