Established in 1990, the Museum is home to a nationally recognised collection that reveals the incredible story of Scotland’s Shale Oil Industry, once a significant global industry, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. West Lothian, was a pioneer in extracting oil from shale, becoming the world’s leading oil producer during 19th century and Livingston lay at the industry’s heart.

Venture down a mine tunnel and experience firsthand the challenges of mining life, explore interactive installations that bring to life the mining industry and the lived experiences of the growing mining communities. Discover the honeycomb of shale mines that sit beneath the surface of West Lothian by navigating our historical maps and data and come face to face with relics of heavy industry that powered the industrial revolution.
